COMPANY HISTORY

A Washington DC Area Tradition Since 1923

1923 Chester H. Keller (our grandfather) begins his plumbing career as a steamfitter’s apprentice making 35 cents per hour.

1931 G.N. Keller & C.H. Keller Plumbing & Heating was formed, G.N. being our great-uncle Gilbert. They began operating out of the family home on Aspen Street in Takoma Park.

1934 The family business incorporated under the name Atchison & Keller, Inc. Ernie Atchison held the D.C. plumbing license for the company.

1941 Atchison & Keller relocated to property they purchased on the 1200 block of Taylor Street N.W., D.C.

WWII Atchison & Keller secured some defense work and undertook the experimental installation of air conditioning in troop trains. These trains were transporting wounded servicemen to military hospitals. This was the first time air conditioning was used in troop trains. Chrysler Motors operating on propane gas were installed.

1945-6 Atchison & Keller installed the first central air conditioning system in the D.C. metro area, specifically the Druid Theater in Damascus, Maryland. A Herman Nelson Air Conditioner was used in that installation.
Post-WWII Atchison & Keller installed the first radiant heat system in the D.C. area. In the beginning these systems were installed in outside walls later floors and ceilings also were utilized.

1958-68 Like us, Melvin C. Keller (our father) grew up in the family business. He graduated from the University of Maryland in 1958 with a degree in Real Estate, then followed that with a Masters Degree in Corporate Finance in 1959, also from Maryland. Upon graduation, he entered the family business, leaving in 1968.

1974 Melvin C. Keller Plumbing & Heating was formed. Our father initially operated out of our home in Beltsville, Maryland.

1981 Melvin C. Keller Plumbing & Heating purchases Bethesda Plumbing & Heating, a well-respected service company, to add to the commercial and remodeling business that our father had already established.

Melvin C. Keller Plumbing & Heating incorporates under the name Melvin C. Keller, Inc. t/a Bethesda Plumbing & Heating and Beautiful Baths. Beautiful Baths was the first company in the D.C. area to open a showroom dedicated strictly to bathroom remodeling.

Melvin C. Keller, Inc. relocates operations to Wilkins Avenue in Rockville, MD.

1986 Melvin C. Keller, Inc. outgrows our Wilkins Avenue location and moves to property our father purchased on Schuylkill Road in Rockville, MD. Here our father creates a building that contains a warehouse, office space and our Beautiful Baths showroom.

1990 Expansion of our current facility to include more warehouse space, a staging area for our remodeling jobs and a larger showroom.

1998 Melvin C. Keller (our father) retires, and we four brothers (Mel II, Steve, Ken and David) carry on the family tradition in the Plumbing trade.

2003 Beautiful Baths adds kitchens to our offering and officially becomes Beautiful Baths & Kitchens.
